Applied tension: Typical causes of fainting when giving blood are the result of a sudden drop in blood pressure - this occurs in about 15% of people. Applied tension is a technique taught by cognitive behavioral therapists that teaches moderate tightening of the abdomen/trunk as well as squeezing/gentle pumping of feet and hand during the blood draw. Highly effective for preventing fainting.
