Liver damage: Sir, your liver is very sick. If you do not stop drinking alcohol and taking any other thing that may be bad for the liver you will die. It is time to let your liver get better. Please stop drinking.

Alk phos, ALT & chol: Low alkaline phosphatase may be due to nutritional deficiencies, possibly related to malabsorption as in celiac disease, hypothyroidism or some genetic causes. Low cholesterol may be ok but if your HDL is also very low in relation to your ldl, it may be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Mildly high alt may signify liver injury or inflammation which can have many potential causes.

Don't mess w/ liver: There are 2 kinds of liver enzyme abnormalities--that signal disease of the liver cells or of the bile ducts.Abnormal liver tests may reflect fatty liver, too much alcohol, toxic exposure, occupational exposures, lot's of viral infections, metabolic problems, familial liver diseases, problems with gallbladder, bile ducts, & pancreas. What are you treating with "natural therapy"? Best to find out!
A 38-year-old member asked:

On a liver dysfunction test the ALT was 175. Is this result dangerous?

Dr. Peter Kurzweil
Internal Medicine 50 years experience
Not in & of itself..: A normal alt is around 50. Even though 175 is over triple this, it is not a very significant elevation. A dx, resulting from a good history and physical exam--with particular attention to liver and spleen size and lymph nodes--other blood test, including other liver function tests, tests for hepatitis, hiv, and tests indicated by h & p--is crucial. It may simply be 'fatty infiltration of liver'.

Repeat / start worup: High sgot/liver enyzme levels are quite common but do need a workup. Causes range from having gotten drunk a few days previous to taking iboprofen to lack of physical fitness to life-threatening, treatable illnesses like viral or autoimmune hepatitis / hemochromatosis / wilson's / drug allergy.
