Phosphene: A phosphene is the experience of seeing light without light actually entering the eye. This can occur from mechanical stimulation such as rubbing the eye, or from the vitreous gel inside the eye pulling the retina internally. Seeing stars from sneezing or coughing is another example. Rarely loud sounds or movement can cause this. An eye exam can insure that the eye and retina are healthy.
