Yes, greater risk: The root canal space in a tooth is filled with both nerve tissue and blood vessels when it is alive. This keeps out infection. When the "nerve dies" this area is now filled with dead tissue, the perfect place for bacteria to live, and an infection develops. Root canal therapy cleans out this dead tissue and fills the space with a sterile material thus lowering the risk of infection.
