The pain can be caused by a number of different issues: an impacted, fractured, or decayed tooth, a periodontal abscess, or a non-vital pulp. Cannot tell if it is an infection without an examination with a radiograph. You've put off treating a problem that has been festering for a while. Can it wait? Unknown. Should it be promptly treated? Most definitely.

Pain = significant problem that you have been ignoring. Do you want to take the risk of your chronic symptoms becoming acute? Wouldn't it be smarter to seek examination to determine cause, and then receive appropriate care? Sorry, a computer click won't do it. Your 10 minute google search is no substitute for a Dentist's 600,000 hours of graduate school coupled with years of experience
