Gum Disease: The primary cause of gum disease is poor or ineffective oral hygiene. Other factors are nutrition, medications, smoking, diabetes, foods that contribute to plaque accumulation, etc. Genetics plays a role in a person's susceptibility to gum disease but in itself does not cause it. Encourage daily proper brushing ; flossing, eating a health diet low in refined sugars as well as regular check-ups.
