how long do visual seizures usually last? can they last just for a split second, or are they usually longer?

Visual migraine: You are probably talking about visual migraine, a condition of the circulation in the occipital lobes. These usually last from 5 minutes to at most 2 hours. If you have photic flashes lasting a second or two, it is probably a retinal/vitreous interaction problem and not seizures.
