Dental pain, could it warrant a trip to the emergency room?

It can: But please remember that most if not all emergency rooms do not treat your teeth. They can diagnose an infection, prescribe pain meds and antibiotics if needed, but you will still need to see a dentist for definitive care. You're better off going straight to the dentist.

Yes, if,: If you are having dental pain with significant facial swelling, difficulty opening and/or swallowing , a trip to the er would be advisable if you are unable to be seen by your dentist or physician. A trip to the er would not be recommended for mild to moderate dental pain.

Not best: Best rx would be provided by dentist, endodontist, or oral surgeon. Er will just help you control pain and spread of infection until you see dentist.

Yes: Unfortunately most ERs don't staff dentists so all they can do is dispense meds without treating the cause. Current stats show ER visit $6000. Average emergency dental visit with treatment $600. You choose.

Rarely: Rarely. If you are having other symptoms like facial swelling, trouble swallowing or breathing - then yes. Otherwise, see a dentist in his/her office. Cheaper, more efficient use of medical system.

Always see DDS: The emergency rooms generally are not staffed by dentists. In emergency rooms, there is a lack of diagnostic equipment (e.g. dental X-Ray) and ER physicians aren’t trained to identify and treat oral health problems. Most oral emergencies relate to tooth pain, infection or orofacial trauma and should be attended by a dentist.
