Not always: Ask both your orthodontist and general dentist to check for you on a regular basis. Unfortunately, many patients think they do not need to have a general dentist examine them and take x-rays routinely during the entire course of orthodontic treatment. A good orthodontist should monitor this and remind patients to see their regular dentist on a routine basis.

Only a dentist: Only a dentist can determine if there is a cavity under or around the braces, unless it is really large.

Perhaps: Call your Orthodontist to schedule an examination. If necessary, your Orthodontist will refer you to your General Dentist for specific treatment.
