Yes, can happen: If the bruit is secondary to carotid stenosis, there is a very high risk of stroke, and this needs to be addressed without delay.

Carotid disease: Should be followed by your pcp, may need carotid doppler. Bruit is s "noise heard with a stethoscope, usually indicating some type of narrowing of vessel.
