Depends on severity: Psychotherapy can be very effective in treating depression -- and is needed in addition to medications when they are used, for best effect. For mild to moderate depression, st. John's wort or sam-e may be worth a try. Acupuncture and homeopathy are also useful. If done consistently, aerobic exercise may be as effective as antidepressants. For severe or psychotic depression, medicine is needed.
