Variable.: Some people work through their depression fine without use of psychiatric medications. However, if a person has significant neurovegetative symptoms (like not eating, not sleeping, not bathing etc.) then they may benefit from psychotropic medications to get back on track.

Not necessarily: If you are experiencing a depression as a result of situational stressors, you can consider alternatives to medication depending on the severity of the depression. If the depression is mild, simple life changes like better diet, better sleep hygiene and more exercise can help. Some over-the-counter agents like SaMe can also help. If the depression is more moderate, psychotherapy is better.
