Can't answer: For other people but many times there is security in uniformity and insecurity when someone close to you breaks the mold so to speak, and chooses a lifestyle outside of the expected norm. Change is uncomfortable for many people, your peers, and peer pressure begins to build when one begins to change. Go for what you want, just don't hurt yourself or anyone else doing it.
