Yes: You can eat more foods with a lower glycemic index and lose weight. You can also eat a lot of "junk' vegan foods and not lose weight. The key is to watch fat intake, as it has a higher calorie per gram factor.Generally if you go vegetarian or vegan, you can lose weight. But add excercise.

Vegan. gluten free: Yes, you can lose weight with a vegan and gluten-free eating plan. But -- this doesn't mean eating a bunch of "gluten free" junky snacks! you still need to eliminate added sugars, artificial sweeteners, and processed foods. Eat veggies, lean proteins, healthy fats (olive oils, avocados, omega-3's like wild alaskan salmon, etc), and complex carbs. Fruits like raspberries, blueberries too.
