HIV Testing: Routine screening for HIV is done w/an elisa test. It looks for antibodies against the virus. It is 99%+ sensitive ; specific for the virus but becomes positive >15+ days after infection. In many countries if +, it is considered diagnostic. In the us we do a confirmatory test (western blot). If it is believed a person has an acute HIV infection, a pcr test looking for viral particles will be done.
