Benadryl (diphenhydramine) melatonin: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) can be safely used. Just make sure that you're not too hung over from it the next day. Also make sure that it does not cause appetite stimulation which could also affect your diabetes. Otherwise there are no warnings regarding diabetes with it. The other option is melatonin. Actually, studies have been done with melatonin and diabetes and has been found that diabetics lack melatonin. The studies show that people who are low in melatonin have a twofold greater chance of developing type two diabetes. Melatoninreceptor sites are interestingly found in the islet cells of the pancreas. This is where Insulin is made. There are no contraindications to diabetics using melatonin. If you do use it, use a maximum of the 3 mg dose taken two hours before your desired bed time. Best wishes.
