Absolutely: If your dentist doesn't offer something to help you keep your mouth open during treatment, just ask for a "bite block" or a "mouth prop" so you don't have to pay such close attention and don't have so much stress on your muscles and joints. In many practices, such devices are standard. They definitely help you stay comfortable.

That depends: That depends on how long the procedure is and wether or not you are having trouble staying open on your own. I rarely find that I need to use mouth props with my pediatric dental patients, instead I give them breaks and allow them a chance to close their mouths. In 27 years I've never had a complaint.
