I need some help please! why would food stuck in your teeth cause your gums to swell?

Dr. Dinh Bui answered

Blockage of fluid: The gum pocket released the crevicular fluid which contains immune cells to combat infection. Food stuck in your teeth will block this flow of crevicular fluid and causing swelling and ultimately pain if not drain. Secondly, your food debris will aggregate and causing foreign body reaction and swelling. Overtime, the debris calcified and formed calculus, harboring bacteria/bacterial colony.
