Dr. Theodore Davantzis answered

Depends on cause: If the tooth is loose due to blunt force trauma, then temporarily splinting the tooth to the adjacent healthy teeth may be in order. If the tooth is loose due to periodontal considerations, then the bone loss needs to be evaluated and gum/bone surgery may be indicated. Hopeless teeth will need extraction. If it is due to a poor bite, then occlusal adjustment may do the trick.

And...: In addition to dr. Davantzis' excellent answer, sometimes mobility is caused by malocclusion. Ask your family dentist if an orthodontic consultation is in order.
