Root canal: A root canal is a procedure used to repair and save a tooth that is badly decayed or infected. An opening is made through the crown of the tooth into the pulp chamber. The nerve and the pulp of the the tooth are then removed and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. The tooth is left intact. A crown then is placed over the tooth. There is no more pain than having a filling.
