Root ampution: Root amputation do work. However, ask about implant replacement. This option should have a better long term prognosis.

Its situational: Depends on the tooth, roots and other factors. If its a part of a bridge, root amp is a good option because it will preserve the bridge. Its tough to say without seeing x-rays and the patient clinically.

Maybe/little: Root amputations can be an excellent option on a multi rooted tooth such as an upper molar if the correct situation exists. The other roots must be sound with good bone support. The procedure involves surgery that is localized and a traumatic with quick healing in most cases.
