Potassium overdose?: It is very difficult to overdose on potassium (k) if one has normal kidney function (kf), unless it is given intravenously. It is not the level of k that can harm a person, it is the rapidity of its change that can do harm. Patients with chronic kidney disease can tolerate a k of 5.5-6 meq/l with no symptoms. Patients with normal kf can have problems if their k increases rapidly from 4 to 5.6.
