See your dentist: Take OTC painkillers may provide some relief until you can get to your dentist. Tooth pain is caused when the nerve root of a tooth is irritated by infection, decay or trauma. The good news is the prognosis is good with appropriate dental care. Remember, toothache pain will not go away on its own.

See a dentist: You need to find out what is causing the toothache and then treat the cause. Medications like Ibuprophen or Tylenol will provide temporary relief of the pain but not cure the problem.
