Latin: Atrium is latin for a welcoming or reception room which leads to other rooms - which is exactly what the cardiac atrium is. (it "welcomes" the blood returning from the lungs into the left atrium or the whole body into the right atrium, collects it, and ushers it into the ventricles.).
