Yes, they do: Need to be in perfect shape. All carious lesions need to be restored, and any gingival irritation needs to be brought under control. Your orthodontist needs to work in a clean environment, and trying to restore teeth with cavities while you are wearing brackets and wires is very, very difficult. In addition, cavities left alone during ortho care only get worse over time.
