It depends: It depends some on your social supports, lifestyle, and family history -- but people most frequently relapse when they stop treatment too soon. Some may "feel fine" after a few months' medication and/or psychotherapy, and want to end treatment. However, studies show that people who continue treatment for at least 8-12 months will do the best. If appropriate, a gradual taper may be possible.

Depression: Depression can come back any time, esp when you are under pressure. for new diagnosed depression we treat it with medications for 6 months . if it come back then it is treated for 2 years and if it comes back again then it is suggested that the antidepressants be taken on long term basis as it improves the quality of life. the patient will have to work closely with their GP .
