I initially had depression for years, it went untreated for a prolonged period of time, could this have escalated to my current condition, bipolar 2?

Bipolar: Your depression and possible bipolar disorder calls for an appointment with a Neurologist as soon as possible. Your primary doctor should refer you. Hope all goes well!

No.: Diagnosing bipolar disorder can be controversial among psychiatrists. One view is that you had bipolar II all along, but it was not clear, and it merely looked like you had unipolar depression. Either someone took a closer look, or you developed hypomanic episodes, which clarified.
