Neurosurgery: All neurosurgeons are trained to be spine surgeons--it is not optional. Some have done additional fellowships, but all finish residency with competency in spine management. We tend to specialize somewhat, but most continue to have a significant spine practice--it's the bread and butter of most neurosurgical practices. Your neurosurgeon just might have more personal interest in brain research.
