A few days: Usually the material dissolves after a few days. Not only does it have hemostatic (blood clotting) features, it also has some antiseptic and analgesic properties. If it lasts longer than that, you should follow up with your dentist.

Call your Doctor: If the intense pain is gone, then the dry socket has healed. It will take a couple more weeks before the gum tissue is grown over the socket and a few months until bone has all filled in. Glad your feeling better. Contact your dentist though. They might want to look at the sight. Just for consult.
