fasting glucose: The easiest way to determine whether you have diabetes is to have a fasting glucose level drawn at a laboratory and evaluated by your doctor. There are fairly strict criteria for the diagnosis of diabetes as opposed to an episode of hyperglycemia. A home glucose monitor reading is not diagnostic and should not be relied upon for the diagnosis.

Screening test: Ask your doctor to do a screening test either a fasting glucose, 2 hour post meal sugar or an a1c.
