Typically : Typically these socks are used to improve blood flow in the lower extremity as diabetics are prone to vascular disease. I would direct this question to the physician who made the recommendation, but typically they are wore during the day. At night i would prop your legs up on a small pillow to improve blood flow back to the heart. One consequence of wearing the socks at night is that it could lead to infections and ultimately ulcers that are also an issue with diabetics.

"Diabetes" : "diabetes" socks are often a lot of hype. There is no clear benefit to wearing them. The point is that your socks should not make your foot swelling worse. So less elastic at the top is good. More important is to protect your feet since you may have decreased feeling in them from neuropathy. You should wear a good soled shoe or slipper in the home when you walk about. The key question is why are your feet swollen there are many possible causes including: low protein in the blood from kidney disease, congestive heart failure, medication (like amlodipine or actos) and sleep apnea that is not adequately treated. So first find out why your feet are swollen and don't focus on the silly socks. You can wear them any time you wear a sock however. Dan weiss md cde facp pns cpi.
