Why all the fuss about local food now? are our farmers any better than the commercial ones in other places?

Local foods: Some people who worry about our environment look at all aspects of our food system including the expense and damage done to the environment by transporting food long distances. This often involves picking fruits before they are ripe or bathing them in chemicals so they will not spoil on the trip. Fossil fuels are burned to transport. This is less a problem with local food. Just saying!
