Think of a cliff: Asthma is a potentially life threatening disease. In spite of advances in therapy, yearly death rates are relatively stable. Mild persistent asthma is worthy of your respect and efforts to improve, so you don't become a statistic, one whose flare up ended in a fatality. The better you can get your control, the further away from the cliff you are and less likelihood of falling off.

Remember: Anyone with asthma, could eventually have a flare so severe that it could be life threatening. Granted this is much less likely the case with someone with mild persistent asthma than more severe forms.
