does a septoplasty only straighten a deviated septum or does it also straighten a crooked/hooked nose?

Possibly: While the septum is the structure inside the nose that divides the nostrils, it may also contribute to the external shape of the nose. A severely twisted septum, especially near the tip of the nose, can lead to a twisted nose. Improving the septal deviation may improve the straightness of the nose. However, fixing the septum will not improve a hump along the bridge of the nose.

i had septoplasty surgery in oct 2014 which straighten my deviated septum &reduced my turbinates. it's may 2015 &my nose is swollen again, making it hard to breathe. it keeps swelling on and off constantly. what can i do?

?: Have you tried pseudoephedrine? You can get it by itself, but it's even better if you get Claritin-D or Zyrtec-D (the "D" indicates pseudoephedrine is one of the ingredients) because, this time of year, allergies are very common, would account for your recurrent symptoms, and get better with the 2 drugs I listed - you may need to take it twice a day until spring is over. Ask 4 it at your pharmacy.

Consult: an allergist  since the problem is recurring and you could be tested for what you're allergic to  and treated with effective medicines. Get well.

Saline irrigations.: After a septoplasty, usually, nothing needs to be done because the normal muco-ciliary clearance of the nose is automatically cleansing the mucus of the nose.  Warm saline (salt water) irrigations are always helpful.

Maybe: Septoplasty is a procedure for deviated septum.  The septum divides your nose in half.  Everyone has some deviation.  If you are symptomatic, have breathing problems which are not helped by medical treatment then you may need this surgery.

Not usually: The septoplasty can straighten a nose if it is corrected. Also if the septum is removed and the support lost the nose my sink in. This is seen in old boxers and called a saddle nose.

Septoplasty failure: Usually, when a septoplasty fails, it means that nasal breathing isn't improved as much as you might like or there might be a cisible change to the nose that is not desirable.  Sometimes this is because the septum bends after surgery and occluded the airway or you can have unanticipated collapse of the weaker cartilages that make up the tip of the nose.  It can possibly be corrected with revision.

ever since my septoplasty my nose has been dry and flakey on the outside. what can i do?

Moisturize: I doubt the dryness on the outside is directly related to what is going on inside your nose.  Applying a good moisturizer several times a day will likely be of benefit.

about half of my ints were removed during a sx i had 3 years ago for septoplasty. am i at risk for worsening of dryness and empty nose syndrome?

No: if you do not have it you should not be that likely to develop it. Just do not have any further turbinate surgery.

can u fix a droopy nose with septoplasty?

Accepted Answer

Not by itself: A septoplasty can be either a standalone procedure, or part of a greater procedure such as septorhinoplasty. In order to correct most cases of tip droop, the more aggressive procedure would need to be performed.
