Depends: It depends on what the blood test was ; you have a right to request the record and consider repeat with your own doctor if you don't agree with the result.

: Not really. If the GI issue was a bleeding ulcer it would, but most other GI problems would not be discovered by a blood test.

Likely: Leukemia can usually be detected by examination of blood, however whether annual blood tests are likely to provide early diagnosis is not known.  Some leukemias will require examination of bone marrow for diagnosis.

A lot: The amount and type of information depends on the tests done.  It is generally not a good idea to do tests that are not clinically indicated.  The more tests you do, more false positives will show up.  Having said that, testing urine for blood and protein, and blood for hemoglobin, glucose, lipids and TSH may be useful as screening tests.

Prudent practice: It is prudent to establish a baseline at a young age, 20 years would not be too young, given the high prevalence of high blood pressure, diabetes, cholesterol abnormalities and cardiac disease risk factors. Family history may dictate other screening tests. After that the tests should be repeated at the discretion of your doctor, keeping in mind that more tests are not necessarily better.

No one answer: It would depend on your medical history, family history and physical findings. However, at a minimum you should have fasting glucose and lipids; and may be cbc. Psa is of questionable value. While not a blood test, you should test your stool for occult blood.

Unclear question: If you are talking about total serum proteins, it may be because you were dehydrated due to not drinking water for the fasting blood test. The other major cause is increase in gamma globulins due to inflammation or tumor of the plasma cells. The starting point of the investigation would be serum protein electrophoresis. lym% 16.8, lym abs 0.9 and co2 is 34 at yearly blood test. dr didn't bring it up. what do those levels mean? should i be concerned?

A little low: The carbon dioxide means nothing but your absolute lymphocyte count might be of interest if you have any other signs of illness. It's a number that fluctuates wildly from day to day. If you feel well, ignore it. I trust you are HIV negative or plan to get screened sometime.

Numbers are just...: Numbers are just numbers. Without the whole picture, such as why was labwork done, numbers usually cannot tell much. The result values in this question may be fine for a normal person with no symptoms, but one should still ask his ordering doctor if the result is ok in the setting of his whole picture. The patient's ordering doctor knows why the test was ordered, and which results would be ok.

just had a routine (annual physical) blood test. everything came back normal except bun/creatinine ratio = 21 bun normal =23 creatinine is good= 1.12 but ratio is high. how serious or important finding ? im 58yo, male, no other symptoms?

: Normal BUN/Creat of 20 or less is just a reference which provides the clinician a hint when dealing certain medical condition. In general, a high ratio above 20 is NOT important as long as both BUN and creatinine are within normal limits. In contrast, the ratio can be normal, less than 20, but the kidney function is remarkably abnormal, give example BUN of 23 and creatinine of 2.0. Take care.
