: Localized steroid injections into joint spaces rarely contain enough steroid to disperse later in the circulation and have any systemic effect. The joint space itself is isolated from direct contact with the circulation making such targeted treatments more effective.

Remember that ice, splints, and medications, including steroid injections, just decrease inflammation temporarily. See details: Sometimes there can be a transient flare secondary to the injected steroid crystals. Apply ice to the area and give it a day.

Injection reaction: It's unlikely this far out from injection.  Typically bad reactions are within hours to days.  If the pain is in your hand, the effects of the injection may have worn off or you have experienced an exacerbation of the arthritis or synovitis that you were originally given the injection for.   I would make an appointment with your physician to see if something else can be done for your symptoms.

: Notify the MD who performed the procedure. Most often post injection flare or pain resolves after a few days and is treated with cold applications. However since nerve or tendon damage can occur from injections your treating physician will most likely want to examine and advise you if symptoms persist.

steroid shot for thumb arthritis. now excruciating pain radiating to shoulder. is this normal? i know it can take days for the injection to work, but is it normal to make it worse? if so, when will it quit hurting so badly? ice & asprin not helping

Abnormal : This is not an expected reaction to a steroid injection of the thumb. Unclear if your new pain is actually related to the injection. I would strongly recommend you revisit your provider for further evaluation.
