Either way: If you are medically stable for general anesthesia, you can request it for skin cancer excision.  The vast majority of patients are awake for this type of surgery, but occasionally patients who are very anxious will request to be put to sleep for this surgery.

Yes: There can be sensitivity and sensory changes ranging from numbness to pain for 3-6 months following surgery.

Accepted Answer

Small: The size of the lesion is medium sized.  Mohs microsurgery can offer best control and there will be a scar associated with it probably not very big.  Radiation has slightly less chance of cure but does not involve cutting so less scar and at times it is favored because of favorable cosmetic result it provides for the location you discribed. Talk to your doctor.

: Mohs surgery is the most effective treatment for SCC because it removes all the malignant cells. How likely any particular SCC tumor is to spread depends on how big it is, how long it has been present, and the immune status of the patient, among other factors.

what is a mast cell in the nose. i have to get sinus surgery soon & doctor says have to open them up & have mast cell on right side. is that cancer?

Never heard of: Mast cells are present in many tissues and are the major source of mediators released in an allergic reactions. Thus it is not an unexpected finding especially in people with allergic rhinitis. I do not understand how the surgery is trying to accomplish. If your primary problem is allergic, see an allergist -surgery is intended for anatomical issues.

Improve, not remove: Scars are permanent, but they improve with time. Pressure treatment, silicone sheeting and steroid injection may hasten their maturation. They also improve with time and may not reach their final appearance for 6-12 months.

OK if not keloid: You can use Vitamin E oil for the area.

Coconut oil is a good lubricant

: Any biopsy or incision in skin may become infected, with a reaction secondary to inflammation.  See the physician who performed the removal of a "skin cancer" for an exam and further treatment.

Don't want surgery?: Forgive my frankness. This is what a basal cell carcinoma on your nose will look like if you let it grow,  before it finds its way into your brain. Let's hope that little thing is something else instead -- with today's fancy mohs surgery, the scars are barely visible.

what's the prognosis for someone who had head and neck cancer that could not all be removed at surgery?

Accepted Answer

Depends: Generally not as good as if all the cancer were removed.  This one is highly variable based on the exact type of head and neck cancer, its stage, where it was located, and whether additional treatment (radiation, chemotherapy) has been or will be performed.  You need to discuss this directly with your otolaryngologist - head and neck surgeon and any other physicians treating you.
