exp. calf soreness & tightness in the morning and at rest. been told ankle sprain can be the cause. had grade 2 sprain 1 yr ago. pt doesnt help. mri shows scarring. cortisone shot is scheduled for next month. is this necessary w/ current symptoms?

: If I understand correctly you have a history of a bad sprain to your ankle. However you are experiencing muscle soreness and tightness to the calf muscle. First off a Cortizone injection to the ankle joint will not help this problem. It sounds the ankle joint is not the problem. You need to stretch and strengthen the calf muscle. A Physical Therapist can instruct you and help you with this

Ankle Sprain: It may heal on its own with rest, ice, compression and elevation and a gradual return to your normal activities. However, a period of time in a boot or use of crutches may be necessary depending on the severity. Not ok: If area is still tender,  you should continue to rest ankle. If you have not yet seen either a podiatrist, orthopedist or sports medicine specialist and/or had x-ray evaluation you should do so.  Ankle sprains involve damaged ligaments and sometimes tendons around the joint.  It takes a very long time for these to heal and professional care is highly recommended.

Time, time, time: Ankle sprain swelling can take as long as a year to resolve. Almost never is it resolved by 5 days. The worst of the swelling typically resolves over 6 weeks. Do not let the presence of swelling cause you to restrict your activities. Instead, let pain be your guide.

More than likely it is tied to the way the blood flows to the feet, supplies the tissues and then returns back up the leg. Medications, blood vessel health, capillary return are just a few possibilities. You would be best served to have a thorough evaluation before any action is taken.

ive had a high ankle sprain since aug 2021 and my ankle is still sore and i have to wear my air walking boot, my x-ray revealed no break in bone. how long until im pain free ?

: High ankle sprains involves the anterior tibia-fibula ligament. This type of sprain requires very aggressive treatment immobilizing for a minimum of 4 weeks. I would immobilize on crutches for 4-5 weeks and re-evaluate at that time   When you bear weight the talus helps to separate the bones . If this fails surgical consideration will be needed.
