: It looks normal except a slightly low MCH. Hb of 12.4 is still in normal limit (on the low side of normal range) for female but it will be better if you have one blood test in the previous year to compare. If your Hb was much higher in the previous year, you may have iron deficiency at this time.  I wonder the last couple words "9/12 bacterial pneumonia" mean you had test done for that diagnosis.

had recent covid and mild pneumonia. labs show low hgb 11.7( ref rg is 12-15.3.), low hct 34.2 (ref rg 34.7-45.1),low neutrophils ab ct 1.6 ( ref rg 1.7-7.7). also had my b12 checked last week and it was elevated to 1389. i do not take b supplement?

Accepted Answer

: You appear to have a low HCT and HGB B supplements are not useful to increase B12 levels. Also looks like low Neutrophils Discuss with your Dr. Check against last test done.  Some low Neuts run in families and ar lower in AAs. Need more details.

Good question: No good answer. In the hospital, a drop in hemoglobin could be due to multiple blood draws, and or administration of intravenous fluids. Infections can suppress the bone marrow that  produces red blood cells, older blood cells die earlier.

is decreased lower left lobe pneumonia different than lower left lobe pneumonia?

Accepted Answer

Don't think so: The left lung only has two lobes (upper and lower) and so the descriptions amount to the same. (The right lower lung is composed of the middle lobe and the lower lobe, so there is a chance for confusion). Decreased pneumonia means, in the opinion of the radiologist, the amount of fluid &amp; inflammation is less than seen earlier. But the "pneumonia" must have been present earlier to have "decreased".

Accepted Answer

They don't: Something else is going on. If this is a homework assignment, either get clarification or report the question to your teacher's supervisor. In chronic inflammation such as leprosy or osteomyelitis, red cell precursors may not hemoglobinize well because of interleukins 1 and 6. This won't happen in an ordinary acute pneumonia.

Possibly: Vap is a major cause of morbidity  in the ICU and prevention should make a difference in mortality and morbidity. Sepsis bundles have been demonstrated to do that.

Re do tests: If it has been more than 3 months since the acute illness you may wish to repeat the tests.

went back now after dealing with pneumonia for over a month and x-ray shows minimally decreased . how long does this take ? should i be on another antibiotic? total time 6 weeks , time feeling better 4 but x-rays not improving much as hoped?

: The radiographic findings may resolve after clinical improvement. IF you are experiencing respiratory symptoms such as fever, cough and shortness of breath, please see your PCP for assessment. It is a reassuring that you are feeling better, but if the x ray is not improved in 8 weeks, additional imaging may be indicated.

pneumonia -first xray april 6th since then it has decreased but its till there after 5 weeks . how long does it usually take to go away ? i am short of breathe but thats all . should i be on steroids and another antibiotic?

Accepted Answer

: Often, in cases of pneumonia, the patient gets better before the chest X-Ray does.  If you have no symptoms and your physical examination shows no abnormalities on lung exam, I wouldn't consider this a case of unresolving pneumonia, would not recommend any medications  but would recheck the chest X-Ray in a month. If you have symptoms or have other concerns, consult a pulmonologist for evaluation

Many things: Too many things to list!  please note that it can also be normal to have a small decrease in hemoglobin and red blood cell count.
