why does pneumonia decrease hemoglobin levels?

Good question: No good answer. In the hospital, a drop in hemoglobin could be due to multiple blood draws, and or administration of intravenous fluids. Infections can suppress the bone marrow that produces red blood cells, older blood cells die earlier.

Does not usually: Pneumonia does not typically decrease the hemoglobin levels. Patients, critically ill with severe pneumonia may have severe inflammation throughout the body ( called the systemic inflammatory response syndrome) these patients may need life support. This group may have low hemoglobin levels because the red blood cells live for a shorter time and fewer are made. This is a consequence of the "sirs".

Trigger factors: Trigger factors come in types: if you have an immune problem (iga), asthma, allergies or similar lung predisposition you will. If you smoke/work around fumes/etc. You might. If you hang around sick people you might. If your diet & rest patterns are unhealthy you might. If you work on what you can avoid/get vaccinated & follow a healthy lifestyle you give yourself the best chance of avoiding it.

Ask your doctor: Depends upon: 1) how elective is the surgery, 2) the degree of anemia 3) are you bleeding - and will the surgery correct the bleeding, 4) your overall health, 5) the nature and complexity of the surgery, 6) the likelihood that delaying surgery will increase your blood count.

Anti fungal agents: Treatment depends on whether the disease is confined to the lungs and whether it is severe or mild. Severe disease and extra-pulmonary disease needs to be treated with amphotericin b, an IV antifungal agent. Milder disease is usually treated with an oral drug called itraconazole which is safe and well tolerated.

Why does MCHC and hemoglobin levels decrease for patients with pneumonia?

1 doctor answer2 doctors weighed in
Dr. Ed Friedlander
Pathology 44 years experience
They don't: Something else is going on. If this is a homework assignment, either get clarification or report the question to your teacher's supervisor. In chronic inflammation such as leprosy or osteomyelitis, red cell precursors may not hemoglobinize well because of interleukins 1 and 6. This won't happen in an ordinary acute pneumonia.
