what would cause lots of tiny air bubbles in a supra pubic catheter? how would air get into bladder.  could it be fistula?

Accepted Answer

Many possibilities : A fistula between bowel and bladder is one possibility.   A gas forming bacteria may be a more likely cause.  It's also possible that air is entering the bladder through the urethra or the cystostomy site.   See a urologist to sort it out.

i have a supra pubic catheter and have constant uti's that have bowel bacteria in them.  ileostomy as well. could i have fistula small bowel - bladder

Accepted Answer

Possibly: Urinary tract infections commonly have bowel bacteria, but if you are concerned and you keep getting them soon after finishing antibiotics it is worth having some testing to determine if there is a fistula.  May involve a ct, a cystoscopy, or a dye study.  Knowing more about why you have an ostomy and a suprapubic catch would allow a better answer.

what is the difference between a supra pubic catheter and indwelling?

Location: A regular indwelling catheter is inserted into the urethra, or channel, where urine normally passes.  A suprapubic tube is placed through the abdominal wall into the bladder as an alternative location for bladder drainage.

i have the supra pubic catheter and i thought once i got it i would stop having accidents but i still am, why.

Catheter: Since there is apparently no obstruction to your bladder outlet some of the urine in your bladder can collect and exit through your urethra. Are you able to have a Foley catheter inserted through the urethra which would stop these accidents? Discuss this with your urologist to see what steps can be taken to stop these accidents.

is blood coming out of the entry to your supra pubic catheter site ok.  also hve sore back. the dressing is covered in blood when changed. ?

Unfortunately not: Much. Intermittent catheter ization is likely to reduce infection. Sometimes bacterium iambic may not indicate active UTI

Here are some...: Have you had spinal cord injury leading to bladder dysfunction requesting S/P tube to drain your urine after failed to other options of care, or just having it for temporary urine drainage? Bacteria in urine would be 100% expected after S/P tube and requires no need for treatment (antibiotics) but good care to avoid unwanted tension and kinking in catheter and tube. There is no definite advantage.

supra pub cath installing. it goes in front to back how do they determine the depth of the bladder? as there has to be room for the water balloon etc in the catheter, will there always be undrained urine below the catheter -utis 3liter okay?

: The bladder size &amp; location is common to all &amp; easily located/sized using ultrasound. The retention balloon that is part of the catheter is small and usually just 2-3X the diameter of the catheter, preventing its accidental loss through the insertion portal.

See below: Pro: no urethral catheter or erosions, may have a slightly lower risk of uti
con: requires a minor surgical procedure to insert, must be changed every 4-6 weeks (like a urethral catheter), still requires a bag.

Foreign body: Ny foreign body within a patient may cause the body to react to "remove" the problem. Can be treated with medications that relax the bladder muscles.
