i have lateral foot pain. there is some bruising and swelling it hurts when im resting and walking. should i get an xray? i have been doing the rice method but that doesn't seem to work. what could be the cause of this?

Yes: An evaluation and x ray may be obtained by seeing urgent care or your PCP. To rule out a fracture, please have an x ray. Apply local ice, take Motrin for pain and elevate your foot.

fracture on left foot. i know pulled a muscle below my right calf. walking with crutches has now strained my shoulders to the point where the hurt, similar to an injury. is there an otc medication that will help with this?

Physiotherapy: Edthere are lots of anti inflammatory medications available but I would advise you to consult with a physiotherapist who can teach you how to manage your walking without causing a strain on your good side .medication should only be used short term, You could even consult a biokinetisis who could teach you some exercises to build up your muscle, good luck

Hard to say: You could have a bone spur but that would usually be painful. I would see either a podiatrist or an orthopedist who specializes in feet. The use of orthotics in your shoes may help. Also try to wear soft soled shoes if you are not doing so at the present time.

Inflamation: I am not an expert and perhaps a physician with more expertise than i can give a better answer... But from personal experience it sounds like you may have inflammation in the bottom of your foot and you may need to wear an orthotic or other treatment to help you.  See a physician experienced in sports or foot injuries for an evaluation and treatment.

Massage: Severe pain in the ball of your feet may be due to your shoe wear, exercise or activity.  You may have developed a morton's neuroma (pinched nerve)or have metatarsalgia(pain around the joints near the toes).  Try massage to the area and wider shoes.  If no relief, please see your podiatrist.

There : There are several different possibilities for this:
1.  If you are having pain when you walk, it could be a morton's neuroma (this is a benign-noncancerous condition).  It is basically a nerve ending that gets too big.  It does not hurt if you push on it and is treated with steroid injection.
2.  If it hurts when you walk, it could be plantar fasciitis also.  This is usually more of the whole bottom of the foot that hurts.
3.  It could be a neurologic issue; your nerves are sending messages for some reason that are abnormal.  
You should have a medical evaluation by a family practitioner or internist to get their opinion.

Ball of foot pain: Sorry to hear, yes you should see a doctor and refer to a specialist for xrays and exam.  The pain could be caused by many things, metatarsalgia (pain in metatarsal bones), capsulitis (inflammed joints), ligament tear (plantar plate rupture), neuroma (impinged nerve), foreign body, stress fracture, etc.  Hope this helps, please let me know if you have other questions. Orthotics: Custom made orthotics that are full-length.
Hard plastic orthotics will most likely not help.
Try semi-functional/acommodative type.

? Fracture: I would show it to your doctor.  He/she will likely recommend an x-ray.  Metatarsal fractures are not uncommon in distance runners.  There are other causes as well but that should be looked at soon.

Plantar fascitiis: Would be my first thought. The ankle pain can be from compensating secondary to the painful arch. If your foot pronators or flattens when standing this can be contributory as well.
