what is the healthiest weight for a 63 year old female 5'4", currently weighing 156 lbs. i am trying to lose weight, however, due to 2 back surgeries, i have shrunk 3 inches in the past 5 years. my bones are strong, no osteoporosos?

: Less than 145 pounds will give you a BMI of less than 25. BMI of 18.5 - 24.9 is considered healthy and I take your original height of 5.4' for calculating this BMI.

Accepted Answer

Yes: Weight loss is a matter of calories in vs. Calories out.  If you eat fewer than you burn, you lose weight.  The marjority of the calories you burn every day are used by things like breathing and maintaining your body temperature, so you don't need to be doing high impact aerobics every day to lose weight (but it helps).   I have no idea what a "beauty bone" is.

Wait for recovery: It is very difficult to lose weight when trying to recover from broken bones. Broken bones (fractures) require proper nutrition for healing. In addition, broken bones often limit mobility and the ability to exercise. In general, I advise my patients to maintain proper nutrition until their bones are healed which will allow them to return to exercise and dieting as necessary.

Stubborn belly: Consult a personal trainer or exercise physiologist to learn the proper way to effectively exercise and strength your core.  Adopt a 'clean' diet, free of pre-packaged and fast foods.  Drink plenty of water!

See an Orthopedist: If not previously evaluated by an ortho, you need to be. If these are bone tumors, that is especially serious. You need to be examined, possible investigations include x-rays, MRI and blood work.

Dietician: Your cramping may be due to excess water intake causing disturbances in your serum electrolytes. For healthy weight loss see a registered dietician at your local hospital who will determine your ideal weight, ideal daily calorie intake depending upon your level of activity, critique your eating habits and give you sample diets to follow. Must eliminate 500 calories a day for a week to lose 1 lb.

No/ helps: Hernia does not shrink but there is less pressure so hernia will improve due to reduced bulk pressing on it.

Yes: Since breast consist of fatty tissue and breast tissue, loosing weight will reduce the volume of fat throughout your body - including the fat in your breasts. Thus the breasts will get smaller with weight loss.

They shrink: The fat cells store fat.  If the fat is used up, the cells shrink to a smaller size.  If one overeats, there is more fat formed in the body.  The fat cells take up that fat, growing bigger in the process.  If the fat is again used up, the fat cells shrink in size again.
