Difficult to know: Tofranil, also known as imipramine, is a tricyclic antidepressant (tca).  It's an older medication, but one that still has much clinical utility.  It can be useful for depression, anxiety, chronic pain and insomnia.  It should be avoided in patients with bipolar disorder -- even during the depressed phase -- because tcas can precipitate mania.  Side effects (constipation, etc.) can be prohibitive.

1-2 weeks: Tofranil (imipramine) or Imipramine is an old tricyclic antidepressant.  You get two types of withdrawal, anticholinergic which can cause sleep problems and diarrhea on withdrawal, and antidepressant withdrawal which is dizziness and flu-like symptoms.  They are usually mild.  If the symptoms are lasting longer than two weeks or worsen i would suspect a return of the underlying condition eg depression.
