Antidepressant: Tofranil is the brand name of imipramine, which was one of the earlier antidepressants. It is an effective medication, and still used at times. Its side effects included dry mouth, blurry vision and constipation, and could not be used in people with certain severe heart issues. Its actions are most similar to Effexor (venlafaxine) or Cymbalta among today's antidepressants, but those two have milder side effects.
