Many treatments: Relieving pressure is of paramount importance in most types of wounds .  After that wound healing is directed to removal of dead tissue (slough, escar &callous) maintaining appropriate moisture(not to dry or to wet) and a good environment for growth of granulation through various treatments and good nutrition.

Complicated process: Multiple factors involved. White blood cells and platelets travel to the site for immune system and blood clotting. Collagen fibers heal across, and new blood vessels grow in. Collagen fibers remodel. Proper body protein level and appropriate vitamin levels help with healing. Poor nutrition, diabetes, cigarette smoking, infection, poor blood supply, Prednisone can delay or prevent proper healing.

&gt;10 years of smoking, in general, will mildly effect wound healing--- but more of a deal if your obese, or have diabetes

Wound healing: Granulation tissue occurs in all wounds. In primary wound healing it is not exposed to the outside as it in secondary wound healing.

Signal and control: Cytokines are secreted by cells as a from of cell-cell communication in order to control and coordinate celleluar response to injury. Integrins are proteins found in the extracellular matrix that are also signals that help coordinate and direct cell attatchment and behavior. All of these chemicals are involved in initiating annd directing proper wound healing.

Many causes: If there is sudden change in wound healing you may want to see a physician for an evaluation and at very least recommendation for treatment due to a specific wound type. The reasons are numerous and can be as innocuous as the site of injury being one that heals more slowly to things such as diabetes, nutritional issues, vascular disease, or other systemic processes.

Metabolic disorders, cancer, nutritional factors and medications, among others, can  interfere in the body's response to a wound and to the ability  to heal.

All of them !: The real question is what slows down healing. Avoid applying alcohol, peroxide, hibiclens, betadine, and bleach solutions. Inflammation ( red, hot, swollen, tender) is important to healing  so anti-inflammatories (motrin, advil) are bad. Cover with a clean dressing changed every other day/protect from trauma.  Antibiotics do not help healing unless it is truly infected. Good nutrition is key !

DM-Slow healing: High levels of blood glucose caused by diabetes can, over time, affect the nerves (neuropathy) and lead to poor blood circulation, making it hard for blood - needed for skin repair - to reach areas of the body affected by sores or wounds.
