What are the roles of cytokines and integrins in wound healing?

Signal and control: Cytokines are secreted by cells as a from of cell-cell communication in order to control and coordinate celleluar response to injury. Integrins are proteins found in the extracellular matrix that are also signals that help coordinate and direct cell attatchment and behavior. All of these chemicals are involved in initiating annd directing proper wound healing.

Very complex topic: Cytokines and integrins are intimately involved in wound healing. The relationships are extremely complex, and a lot of research is being done in this area. There are very few resources available on this topic for the general public. If you have a technical background, try searching on pubmed.

Needs a big textbook: Cytokines are released by lymphocytes and regulate other cells and parts or the immune system. Integrins directly "tell" immune cells whats going on in the "extracellular space" the immune system is the starting point for wound healing and these help regulate some of the cells involved as well as directly and indirectly affecting growth factors and matrix metaloproteinases needed to heal.
