thyroid ultrasound question:  what do cancer's look like on ultrasound?

Darker than normal: Ultrasound shows differences in density of thyroid nodules. They many times seem darkerthan normal thyoid tissue. Sometimes you can see increased amount of small blood vessels. Sometimes you can see small specks of calcium.

i just got the results from my thyroid ultrasound and it says that both lobes have an atypical cyst with small calcifications should i be concerned?

Need evaluation: You should be seen by a thyroid specialist who can review the ultrasound; if there are worrisome features, a simple "fine needle aspiration" biopsy can be done in the office with a very thin needle.  In most cases this will tell whether the nodule requires further treatment.

can an ultrasound determine whether a lymph node is cancerous vs reactive? i have a thyroid ultrasound in two days and am coming down with a cold. i am wondering whether any abnormal lymph nodes will show and alter the results?

: The ultrasound would differentiate between the thyroid and a lymphnode however there would be a need for biopsy usually to differentiate what may be causing the enlarged lymph node. The radiologist may be able to speculate possibilities in reporting the ultrasound but usually not definitively.

can a thyroid ultrasound miss cancer? i had one that was normal a week ago but pcp says one side is enlarged. abnormal tsh normal free t3t4 confused?

Yes: A CRI and or nuclear scan are much more reliable for the detection of small tumors; however, for general screening, the ultrasound will certainly suffice. Please obtain an endocrinology evaluation for "abnormal TSH ( high or low???)

thyroid ultrasound reveals slight increase in size of lobes from 3 5x1.2x.9 mm to 4.1x2.1x 1.2mm and isthmus is .1. no nodule. tsh slightly high inspite of synthroid.have hashimoto's is the increase abnormal? could it be cancer?

: Your thyroid is currently hypoactive and is trying to make more hormone which causes increase in size. Your synthroid dose needs to be increased in order to bring your thyroid into proper range.

Multinodular thyroid: The most common cause of your ultrasound finding is a multinodular goiter. Majority of time these are benign and the thyroid will have normal function. It is actually more of a concern for cancer when the thyroid only has 1 or 2 solid nodules, not dozen of smaller ones. A thyroid biopsy is a simple test to sample suspicious nodules.

The thyroid ultrasound exam specifically measure the thyroid gland size  (to assess for enlargement or shrinkage), the thyroid texture (for autoimmune or inflammatory diseases that cause heterogeneity), presence of lumps (nodules that may be benign or cancerous), and the amount of blood flow (increase in certain conditions).

Simple test...: That puts a  device on skin over neck, bounces radio waves into tissues in neck to take echo-pictures of thyroid
