Sound waves not xray: A thyroid ultrasound uses sound waves rather than x rays to take a picture of the thyroid gland, blood vessels and lymph nodes in the neck. It is an excellent test to distinguish if a thyroid "nodule" is solid or fluid-filled ( a cyst).
