Varies with age/sex: Older men and women, &gt; 70 yrs, at greater risk for bone fracture have the highest RDA's (recommended dietary allowances) for vitamin D: 800 IU/day. Except for infants, 600 IU daily is recommended for both men and women throughout adulthood. Fortified foods (including milk and cereal) and sun exposure provide most of this for Americans. Fatty fish (salmon, tuna) are best food sources. Good wishes:)

: Definitely Vitamin D is essential.  We have shown that 40 International Unit per pound per day (about  80 International unit per Kilogram per day) is not toxic. Vitamin D is a pre-hormone &amp; controls Cytokine secretion &amp; coagulation among many other systems.

: Talk with your PCP or book a telemedicine visit to discuss more. This all depends on underlying medical history, diet quality, surgical history, etc.

i have a hard time swallowing pills...what recommendations are there for chewable vitamins?

Common problem.: Many people have difficulty swallowing pills. If this is a new problem for you or you are getting pills/food stuck when you swallow, see your doctor. Otherwise, ask your pharmacist for chewable vitamins. "gummy" vitamins are popular with kids and are widely available. Your pharmacist can help assure that you are taking adult equivalents. Same I always say: I have always been an advocate vitamins are not necessary if you eat properly. Most don't, so a basic multivitamin is a 'supplement' not a substitute  for sensible proper diet.

i have been on vyvanse (lisdexamfetamine) for the last 6 years. i want stop taking it, but am terrified of the weight gain.any recommendations on vitamins that will help?

Diet and exercise: The problem with ALL amphetamine compounds is that there will be some metabolic changes upon stopping the medication...in particular some weight gain may happen.  My suggestion to you is make sure your eating a healthy low fat low carb diet and begin working out and going to the gym if your not already.

i have been taking oral steroids for almost 6 months, and my hair is starting to fall out. i will need to continue the steroids for awhile. do you have any recommendations on hair shampoo or vitamins to help with the hair loss?

: Are you sure that you have lost hair because of steroid use? Most of the time, people lose their hairs 2-3 months after an acute sickness (telogen effluvium) and that could be the case. Iron and biotin supplement with good protein intake may be helpful. Good luck.

Folic Acid: Folic Acid supplementation is important to help prevent neural tube birth defects.  This is contained within all prenatal vitamins. You can choose any prenatal vitamin that you find appealing.

: For healthy diet: http://www.choosemyplate.gov/., exercise 30 minutes/day, drink enough water daily so your urine is mostly colorless, have safe sex, no tobacco alcohol weed or street drugs. 
Taking an over the counter multivitamin is safe and may be beneficial.

: For 2 or more decades that I recall but it is more accepted the further you go from the equator &amp; among populations with less sun exposure. People didn't wear seatbelts before they emerged as a benefit. Some folks will still not wear them, and suffer as a result.  It is safe at recommended dosing. Poor vitamin D levels are associated with many afflictions and poor immune function.
